Architect by Higher School of Fine Arts of Oporto since 1955, being his first work built in 1954.
He practices in Oporto.
He is a Professor at Higher School of Fine Arts of Oporto, Polytechnic School in Lausanne, University of Pennsylvania, Los Andes School in Bogotá, Graduate School of Design of Harvard, and Faculty of Architecture in Oporto.
Honorary Doctorate by: University of Valencia Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, University of Palermo, University Menendez Pelayo, National University of Engineering of Lima, University of Coimbra, Lusíada University and Federal University of Paraíba.

Awards
1988 - Gold Medal of Architecture from the Higher Council of Architects College of Madrid and from Alvar Aalto Foundation; Prince of Wales of Harvard University Award and European Award of Architecture form the European Communities Commission/ Mies Van der Rohe Foundation.
1992 - Pritzker Award by Chicago Hyatt Foundation, for all his work.
1993 - National Architecture Award by the Portuguese Architects Association.
1996 - Architecture SECIL Award
1999 - Grand Cross of Infante D. Henrique Order, awarded by Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.
2000 - Architecture SECIL Award, among others.
